FINANCIAL NEED AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
More Information on the Edward Owens Agency
After working in the insurance industry for 3 years, and getting offered to be an agent from another insurance company, we decided to start our own agency. We started the agency out of our home for 3 months and then an opportunity came to join an office at 33 Main Street in Halifax, Virginia. After being there for 16 years, we moved to our current location at 120 Edmunds Blvd. in Halifax, Virginia. Over the last 35 years we’ve gained experience working with all types of insurances including life, health, home, auto, motorcycle, commercial property, commercial auto, general liability and worker’s compensation. We feel awfully blessed to have been in business for over 35 years, and we are thankful for all of our clients over those years.

THE ATTORNEY YOU CAN BE PROUD OF
A Legacy of Service
Cunningham Law Group gets its bedrock values from Joel C. Cunningham, retired Virginia Circuit Court Judge. Before he was a judge, he provided free representation to Social Security Disability claimants through the Virginia Legal Aid Society. After he became a judge, he encouraged younger lawyers to donate some of their services to people in need. He’s always been a champion of people with disabilities and financial disadvantages. During his career, he advocated for disability applicants, children in special education and people struggling with creditors. He started a drug court. He received the Community Service and Scales of Justice Award. He was the first African-American appointed as a judge to Virginia’s 10th Judicial Circuit.
But maybe the most important thing was how Judge Cunningham passed these values to his son, Joel Cunningham Jr., who was inspired by his father to help his Virginia neighbors through Cunningham Law Group. Joel Cunningham Jr. established the firm in 1998, in conjunction with his father switching to work as a judge. Since then, we’ve helped thousands of Virginia residents.

TRUCKING AT ITS BEST!
H&M Logging takes top honor from chamber of commerce
There’s more to the logging industry than simply logging, so much more, and Kenneth Hodges and H&M Logging are growing to keep pace with the challenges facing the industry. H&M Logging, which has grown from five employees in 1983 to almost 70 employees and to one of the top-four operations of its kind in the region, was honored as Business of the Year by the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce during the chamber’s annual meeting on Thursday at The Prizery. H&M Logging makes contributions to the Halifax County High School robotics program, to area fire departments, the Halifax County-South Boston YMCA, and The Prizery among many others, according to presenter Robert Smith, CEO and owner of Grand Springs, whose business won the award last year. Starting in 1983, the operation had four employees, one pickup truck and two 10-wheel trucks with which it hauled wood, according to owner Hodges, and the multi-million operation now employs over 70 people and has 27 tractor-trailer trucks and 120 trailers of all types.
The operation hauled 35-40 loads a week in the 1980s but now hauls 75-80 loads a day, including logs and pulpwood to several plants in the area, including NOVEC in South Boston, J.M. Huber, Louisiana Pacific and Georgia Pacific. Hodges has discovered ways to save money in managing his fleet, buying bulk fuel, with a 45,000-gallon tank at his operation on Sinai Road. He estimates that saves an average of 40 cents a gallon on fuel costs.
It took hard work, dedication, a very positive mind and a “don’t ever give up” attitude to make H&M Logging what it is today, according to Hodges, president of H&M Logging.
Hodges has been an entrepreneur his entire life, starting with cutting grass as an 8-year-old, which led to his chosen career several years later. “I’m an outside type of guy,” said Hodges, who started helping logger and farmer Anthony Miller several years later. When most young people were dreaming of buying a car, Hodges bought a tractor at the age of 12 to drag wood, and he also managed to find time to grow tobacco. The logging operation was known as M&H Logging until 1984, when Miller bowed out, and Hodges bought majority interest in the operation, changing the name to H&M Logging. People are fortunate to make a career out of something they love to do and have a passion for, and Hodges knew what he wanted to do and worked hard to get there.
A contract logger for many years, Hodges now buys land and timber, and he continues to expand his operation. H&M Logging currently has 10 crews in the field, and three other loggers contract with him now, Hodges explained. He estimates he buys approximately 200 acres of timber each week, and he re-seeds every acre of timber on acreage that he owns. Hodges recently announced his intentions of opening a new sawmill in Halifax County, Slick Rock Sawmill, an operation with an initial investment of $1.3 million that will provide jobs for 12 people. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced a $12,000 grant approved from the Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund to assist in that initiative.
Plans call for the operation to saw tie lumber, grade lumber and generate chips, bark and sawdust, Hodges said. Hodges’ success also is reflected in his son, Kevin, who in 2011 started Ke Ja’eh Logging, which moves almost 200 loads of logs each week and currently employs 60 people, according to his father. Think of a role model, and Kenneth Hodges should come to mind, an example of what hard work can do if an individual is focused and energetic, has drive and knows where they’re going in life. Think of the word “leadership,” and Kenneth Hodges also comes to mind, this time in the words of his 10-year-old granddaughter when asked to define the word. “When I was coming along, things were still tight in this area as to what people could do, and I heard a lot of negativity,” recalled Hodges. “When I bought two brand new road tractors in 1986 and 1987, people said I’d never pay for them, and I bought a four-wheel drive pickup in 1990 to haul the guys, and they said I’d never pay for it. “I paid for them with no problem.” Hodges continues to prove all his doubters wrong.

More on Lipscomb & Associates
Philippians 4:13 (NLT) “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
Mr. Hicks, a former tax preparer, inspired me with his demeanor. I would go to his office, as a teenager with my parents. Mr. Hicks always displayed a sense of humility with his clients. He demonstrated a compassion for his clients. He loved his work. He had so much patience for his clients. He planted a seed in my mind. My involvement with this profession began in 1972. My accounting professor at DCC prepared my individual taxes for me, I reviewed his work and realized that I was able to do the same thing. That is when my I really made up my mind to follow in this profession.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Foundation Supporters,
“Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough.”
---Mary McLeod Bethune
Welcome to the Bethune Scholarship Foundation Inc. website. This site provides an online presence for the foundation. Thank you for your commitment for the growth of the Bethune Scholarship Foundation, Inc. to continue to aid students pursuing a college education. A college education remains the key to achieving career goals and dreams. The Bethune Scholarship Foundation Inc.'s mission is to provide college scholarships annually to high school graduates in Halifax County, Virginia.
The Foundation continues to grow and strengthen. In 2003, the Foundation instated its $500,000 scholarship endowment goal by launching the Gift Campaign 2003 – 2013. We have reached fifty-seven present of the goal. To reach a $500,000 endowment amount, a Gift Campaign 2021 – 2030 needs the donation from 500 alumni/supporters in the amount of $100 annually for 10 years to accelerate the growth of the scholarship fund. A $500,000 endowment will ensure that annual scholarships will be available indefinitely for deserving Halifax County High School seniors. With this in mind, your support is requested in the amount of a tax-deductible contribution of $1,000 over the 10 years or sooner if you wish.
Your generosity over 43 years has resulted in $108,000 being contributed to 153 deserving students like myself. Thank you. Your support of our Scholarship Foundation Endowment growth will enable continued educational support of Halifax County college bound seniors. Again, I ask you to use today to prepare for tomorrow through your support of Gift Campaign 2021 – 2030.
Thank you and if you need information regarding the Bethune Scholarship Foundation, we have someone who can help. Please schedule an appointment with our leadership though our booking calendar.
Sincerely,
