One of the goals of the Mary M. Bethune Alumni and Associates of the former Mary M. Bethune High School of Halifax County is to give scholarships to graduates of Halifax County High School.

To achieve this goal, the Mary M. Bethune Alumni and Associates formed the Bethune Scholarship Foundation Incorporated in 1978.

Since that time, 153 scholarships have been awarded to graduates of Halifax County High School.

This year the Mary M. Bethune Scholarship Foundation awarded four $1,000 scholarships to Tanaya Janee Brandon, Justin Thomas Pool, Makayla Amanti Johnson and Lamont Xzavier Leigh.

“As treasurer of the Bethune Scholarship Foundation Inc. General Board and a 1981 Bethune Scholarship Foundation Inc. recipient, I am honored to present the four 2022 recipients of the Bethune Scholarship Foundation Inc. scholarships,” said Mary Hamlett.

Johnson received the Marie C. Williams-Turbeville Scholarship and Leigh received the Rev. Dr. James Moise Crowder Memorial Scholarship.

Brandon will be attending Howard University where she plans to major in biology, and Pool will be attending North Carolina State University to major in engineering.

Johnson will be attending Old Dominion University where she plans to major in nursing; and Leigh will be attending Morehouse College majoring in psychology, specifically for pre-med.
